Inside
in flight
a sudden light fell across my eyelids.
I awoke, blinked in the brightness,
turned my face to the cabin window,
its shade pulled down half-way like a sleepy lid
drawn over a blazing eye, its shining
gaze fixed on me, warming my skin,
flooding my retina with light. I shone right back
without squinting, me and the sun eye to eye.
I stared straight into the shimmering mirror and saw
the part of me that sees, made of light, glowing
from within. How blind I’ve been—
I couldn’t look away from all that glory
inside.
